The Central Teachers Eligibility Test (CTET) which used to be conducted twice every year by CBSE, has not been organized since the last 14 months. More than 5 lakh aspirants (a conservative estimate) have suffered due to this delay.
CTET is a national level standardised test that offers job opportunities to people as Teachers in different government schools. Since 2011, nearly all government and CBSE recruit only those candidates who have cleared CTET.
In 2017, HRD Ministry decided to conduct the exam only once a year instead of two as CBSE stated that they were “overburdened” with responsibility of conducting multiple examinations. But as we have already covered, CBSE hasn’t released any notification on when the exam would be organized.
Why is the exam conducted?
Other than creating a simple and transparent medium for offering jobs, CTET improves the standard of inducting students. Government schools used to have a very poor public image, and not many people preferred to study there. The biggest gripe people had was that the teaching standards were well below the par.
CTET has helped in improving that aspect. Candidates who have cleared the CTET definitely possess vast knowledge in their subject. This has helped improve the standard of teachers that are accepted into government schools.
Scope of CTET
The scope of the exam is vast, with all government and CBSE schools accepting CTET scores for offering jobs. All the schools under the central government, such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Schools and Tibetan schools, among others, accept CTET scores.
Kendriya Vidyalayas have 1094 branches in India and abroad, making it the largest chain of schools in the whole world. Plenty of job opportunities there!! Jawahar Navodaya schools have 589 functional schools and 660 sanctioned schools. No lack of opportunities there as well. There various other schools where one can apply after CTET.
It should be noted that CTET scorecard does not guarantee a job, but is rather an eligibility condition for applying. Due to the low number of students that are able to clear the exam, it is a very desirable criterion.
The Competition
Over 5 Lakh students were expected to appear in CTET 2017(a conservative estimate). The exam was last held in September 2016, and there were more than six and a half lakh people who appeared for this exam. In 2013, a total of 7.76 Lakh people appeared for the exam, out of which only 10% candidates cleared the test while in September 2012, only 1% of the total test takers cleared the examination.
Consequences of the Delay
CBSE was supposed to release the official notification for CTET at the beginning of the year, for the exam to be held on February 2017. There was no notification this year, and neither is there a confirmation on when the exam would be held next.
CBSE has decided to stay mum on the topic, which provides no comfort to CTET aspirants. CTET 2018 is supposed to be in February 2018, but there has been no notification regarding the same as yet.
Students who aspired to be teachers in government educational institutes find themselves in a weak situation. Some students feel frustrated, while others are worried. Popular social media platform ‘Quora’ has a lot of people being vocal about their worries. The aspirants have been getting restless as more than a year has passed since the exam was last conducted, jeopardizing their career and wasting their time. Let’s hope for the release of official notification soon.
