How sport is beneficial to education

November 11, 2021

Sports play a big part in the lives of many people around the world. Some folk is lucky enough to have a career where they play sports professionally, or in some kind of role connected with it. Others just watch it for entertainment, often using it as an escape from reality where they are able to forget their worries for a short period of time.

Then you have the people who kind of hover in between those two groups. Those who make money from sports through activities such as betting on free sports picks, adding a little more excitement to the entertainment. But sports actually brings so many more benefits than making people money or entertaining them. One area in particular that sports benefit is education.

But in what ways can sport benefit education? How does it help those within education develop? Well, you’re about to find out!

Promotes teamwork

Whilst you may see some sports stars stealing the limelight from their teammates, it’s not often the case. Take Mo Salah, for instance, the Liverpool FC forward, he’s renowned for scoring goals, but he also does a lot more for his team than just scoring goals. He assists other players in scoring too and even can be seen constantly tracking up and down the pitch to help out his defense when under pressure. That’s because sports like football promote teamwork.

It’s all well and good having incredible individuals, but if a team doesn’t work together and have chemistry, it’ll ultimately fail. Look at Manchester United right now, they have one of the greatest players of all time in Cristiano Ronaldo, but the team is so poor. They lack the cohesion the likes of Liverpool have in their squad. So sport is ideal for teaching those in education about teamwork, and the importance of working in a team.

Lowers stress

Being a student in education nowadays can be stressful at the best of times. So many classes to take, so much homework to do, then when that’s all dealt with you have exams you need to pass and coursework as well. But playing sports has been proven to lower stress, by releasing endorphins as you push your body, it balances out the chemicals in your brain and reduces the chemicals that cause anxiety and stress.

Not just that but it can help you focus and teach you to manage challenging situations. Both skills again can be great in combating stress hormones. If we can teach young people to do this in education, they’ll have a much more positive future and better mental health.

Potential to give you a better education

This primarily works in the States, because it is a very different education system to other countries, although that’s not to say it doesn’t open doors elsewhere too. But essentially, in America, if you’re good at sports, then you can earn scholarships that give you a free ride to better education. The colleges foot the bill for you attending, in return for you playing for their team, which generates a lot of income for these institutions, and your commitment to study hard.

If you’re really good, you may even get to go professional after that. But if not, then having invested your time in sports could at least land you a decent education that will help you toward getting a better job. Improving the prospects for your future.

Fighting childhood obesity

We’ve become such lazy people over the last few decades, and obesity is on the rise. We no longer seem to be as active as we once were, because technology has become too convenient and we let it do everything for us. So it’s important that we change this for young people so that they have a better, healthier future.

And one of the biggest things about sports is how it can help to improve fitness, tone muscle, and burn fat. Fighting not just childhood obesity by encouraging those in education to take part in sports, but it also helps reduce the risk of issues such as heart disease too. And if we can instill these kinds of thoughts into young people whilst in education, they are likely to continue with sport after education, even if it isn’t professionally, but just recreationally.

Final words

There are so many more ways in which sport can benefit those in education, but the points above give you ideas of how they can help. They build positive characteristics and attributes within people, help alleviate mental health issues, can increase prospects for the future, and lead to better physical health too. It really is an important and integral part of education and one that we should encourage more of, in order to give the young people the best chances possible to flourish and have bright futures.
