Top Law Study Tips

April 4, 2023

Law is notorious for being one of the most difficult college courses and careers out there; however, this also makes it one of the most rewarding. Whether you wish to specialize in a will writing service, Bristol, or you’re more interested in commercial law elsewhere, a career in law means you’re making a difference.

The same can be said for any college course, but you’re not going to be successful in law if you don’t dedicate yourself to studying. That said, effective studying doesn’t mean working throughout all hours of the day and night and never giving yourself a break. It’s about striking a healthy balance and just doing the best you can.

Refrain from All-Nighters

Firstly, college students have a reputation for pulling all-nighters to reach deadlines. Despite this, all-nighters aren’t healthy, and they’re often far from productive. You may need to get the work done, but you also need your sleep (at least six hours of it each night). What’s more, if you’re sleep deprived, there’s no way you’re going to be able to produce quality work.

To be a good law student, you must first be good to yourself and give yourself allowances. If you plan your time correctly and allow yourself plenty of time to meet deadlines, you should never have to pull an all-nighter.

Treat Your Degree Like a Job

One of the best ways to be successful in your law degree is to treat it as a full-time job. This may not be possible for all students, as some will require part-time jobs to be financially stable. If this is the case, though, students should never prioritize their part-time jobs above their degrees. It’s very easy to bite off more than you can chew and burn the candle at both ends, which isn’t a healthy way of living. If your employer is demanding too much of you, make this known to them, and if nothing changes, look for employment elsewhere.

Balance Studying and Relaxing

As previously mentioned, effective studying doesn’t mean having your entire life revolve around your degree. If you study for multiple hours a day and never give yourself time to do the things you enjoy, you’ll very quickly become burned out. Each evening, give yourself some time to watch your favorite TV show, play your favorite game, or do any other activity you enjoy. Each week, make sure you’re going out and socializing. Never feel guilty about taking time out for yourself; this is needed to be a happy and healthy human being.

Plan Out Your Week

Everything will seem a lot more manageable if you block out your week on a Sunday, as you’ll be able to visualize exactly what you need to get done over the week. When you do this, make sure you allow yourself some leeway, as not every day is going to be as productive as others. If you don’t overfill your day, this means you can easily slot anything that’s been missed into other days. So long as you’re not doing anything at the last minute, you’re able to be flexible about how you spend your time.

Weigh Up the Workload from the Get-Go

Law courses are intense and full of details and complexities. There’s no escaping this fact, meaning it must be addressed from the get-go. Don’t let this overwhelm you, though, as proper preparation will make the whole process a lot more manageable. You’ll be given a calendar at the start of the year, allowing you to plan around revision periods and exams accordingly. If nothing else, planning is the key to success in a law degree.
